Alan Richardson: We have a good group of new faces; I′m happy the camp is growing

The Can Do Basketball referees camp took place in Sofia this past week. For sixth straight year Bulgaria was the host country and was again everybody involved was happy with everything from the organization to the games. Here is what the director of the camp, which takes place since 1993, Mr. Alan Richardson had to say between some of the games:

- How do you see the development of the young referees in Europe?

- From FIBA perspective it′s very optimistic. We have a very very good group of new faces. The philosophy of the new people is completely different from the older generation. Mr. Davorin Nakic and I are very happy with the way it′s going.

- What is your proposal to the federations and the referees associations in each country regarding finding new and talent young referees. How to motivate them?

- Two weeks ago we had a special clinic for national instructors. This is a drive to raise the level of professionalism for the national instructors. Getting the qualification is one thing but it′s not a guarantee that the quality will change. I hope that it will and that what the instructors have learned, hopefully will change things in their federations. But they can′t do it just by themselves. They need to have the support of the federation itself, investing in opportunities for new faces.

- How do you see the balance between senior referees and young referees in the leagues and in Europe?

- The expression Davorin Nakic used one morning was young sharks. The sharks are coming to eat the old generation. And it′s very true. They are very highly motivated, they are very intelligent, they are learning very quickly and also adapting to new philosophies and the way we want the game to be called and officiated.

- This is the 23rd addition of Can Do Basketball camp and the sixth one in Bulgaria. Are you satisfied and proud to have one of the most prestigious referees camp in the world?

- One of the reasons that we′ve been here for so long and hopefully will continue, is the organization by Mr. and Mrs. Shtriks. The BIBL organization has always done a good job so far and every year seems to get better and better. It′s not just down to myself. There are a lot of people who have helped over the years for this camp to become so successful. It started as a small camp with 24 referees and now we have so many. I′m very happy it′s growing and there are many people who want to participate every year.

- What advice would you give to the referees here in Sofia?

- Never stop learning.
