Balkan Men`s League in a process of creation

A Balkan International Basketball League is on its way from next season. It will include teams from the Balkan countries that want to perform on a higher than the national level. 
 

The organizer of the League will be “Balkan Sport & Travel” along with the federations of the countries from the region. “Balkan Sport & Travel” is being run by the ex referee Shay Shtriks and the former Bulgarian famous basketball player from the recent past – Robert Gergov. 
 

The main idea is that the competition should consist of teams from the Balkan peninsula and some talks have already been made with the federations of Romania, Macedonia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey. The interest everywhere is really high. As well, a few conversations with separate teams that want to be a part of the league have been made. The federations will have the task to choose the teams and offer them to the organizers, who will have the final decision which team is going to participate or not. For the moment, the project is to create only a men’s league, but it is pretty possible to be a women’s one also.

Gergov and Shtriks are popular with their good work in the former FIBA South Conference which headquarters was in Sofia.

“More information about the whole project will be announced in public in a month and a half. Everything will be 100% professional and we will work with all the federations directly. This idea has been in my mind for three years. The purpose is to make the basketball on the Balkans popular. This is one of the reasons I recommended Pini Gershon in Bulgaria, because the basketball here is really popular and can be developed” – said Shay Shtriks.
 

There will take part from 10 to 12 teams from the above-mentioned countries in the league. In the preliminary rounds they will be divided in groups and after that in eliminations the winner of the league will come true. The culmination at the end will be the Final Four. The competition will be coordinated with FIBA Europe and it will continue from October 2008 to April 2009.
 
The foundation of such a league will undoubtfully be of great importance to the region that has always had traditions in that sport. The BIBL will make happy the supporters of different teams not only in Bulgaria but on the peninsula and even ones that perform for the first time on the international stage.

Until the end of April, on a special press conference, the organizers will announce the rest of the details around that Balkan League.
