High-scoring Akademik holds on for the win
In a battle of two of the newcomers in SIGAL-UNIQA Balkan League, Akademik Bultex 99 managed start with a win. The Plovdiv team visited KK Ibar in Rozaje and held on for a 94-83 victory. The guests led from start to finish but almost led a big lead slip away. However in a decisive moments the team scored twice in a row and took the victory. Next week Akademik will host SK Tirana while Ibar will travel to play KK Kumanovo 2009.
It was a close start to the game as both teams fought hard early. However Akademik was the first to make a run and went up by 8-points in the first period. In the second the visitors did even better and with some good 3-point shooting and fast breaks managed to take an 18-point advantage after 20 minutes.
The Plovdiv team controlled the difference early in the second half but near the end of the third period the home side closed the gap. However the players of Ibar didn′t stop fighting and cut the deficit to just 9 points in the middle of the last quarter. With two straight triples the difference went down to just 6 with less than three minutes to play but then immediatelly Shakir Smith answered with one of his own. After Ibar missed Umipig scored a jumper and it was enough for Akademik to hold on until the end.
Vasil Bachev was the top scorer for the winners with 17 points. Three other players also did well and scored 16 each - Manuel Johnson, Shakir Smith and Vassil Mihaylov.
The captain Nedim Felec led the home side with 18 points as Eldin Kalic added 17.
