IN MEMORIAM: Valentin Lazarov passed away

The basketball world mourns the passing of one of the best referees there ever was - Valentin Lazarov. He passed away on Monday at the age of 89 after a short illness.

Mr. Lazarov was one of the most respected basketball people in the world. During his career he has more than 540 international games and has taken part in 10 Olympic games. He is also a member of the Hall of Fame of FIBA.

Mr. Lazarov was one of the best specialists when it comes to basketball rules. For 12 years, between 1994 and 2006, he was the main interpreter of the basketball rules for FIBA and then was the chief of the experts group on the changing of the rules.

Mr. Lazarov was also a great friend and supporter of the Balkan League and of the Sports Director of the competition - Mr. Shay Shtriks. When Mr. Shtriks became an international referee back in 1988, it was Mr. Lazarov who was his instructor.
