Four BIBL countries qualified for EuroBasket 2011 for now

Four countries, who have clubs playing in the EUROHOLD Balkan League qualified directly for EuroBasket 2011 in Lithuania.

Croatia and Serbia qualify automatically, as right now they are playing in the FIBA Wolrd Championship in Turkey, while Macedoni and Montenegro fought hard to earn their way to Lithuania next year.

Macedonia finished second in Group B, with a balance of 5-3, right behind Great Britain (6-2). Despite that, Marin Dokuzovskis team qualifies directly to EuroBasket 2011 as one of the best second-placed teams. In the direct matches against Great Britain, Macedonia had advantage after a 96-104 loss away from home, and a big 75-56 win in Boris Trajkovski Arena in Skopje, but in the last round they lost to Bosnia which made them finish second. Bo McCaleb was the key figure for the team in the qualifying campaign, averaging 23.5 points per game, along with 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals.

In Group A, Montenegro finished first with 6-2 balance and qualified for EuroBasket for the first time in their history. Dusko Vujosevics squad left behind them teams such as Italy and Israel. The only two losses for Montenegro were against those two nations - 73-77 against Israel and 71-72 against Italy. Nikola Pekovic led the way for his country, averaging 20.3 points per game. Omar Cook was a floor general, averaging 6.3 assist and 1.3 steals per contest.

Bulgaria failed to qualify directly to EuroBasket 2011, and now Rosen Barchovskis squad will have to go through additional qualifiers next year right before the start of EuroBasket 2011.

American basketball player Josh Gonner arrived in Botevgrad. According to the preliminary agreement with the agency wich representing him, he will stay for a trial period in Balkan.

Gonner left very good impressions in his first practice, although it seemed pretty tired after the long travel to Bulgaria. He was presented to the coaching staff and players on the team, and was welcomed by his compatriot Dwayne Morton.

Last season Josh Gonner played in Finland - and after the regular season, finished sixth in the premier Korisliga of the Scandinavian country. 188 cm tall Gonner became top scorer of the Finnish team with 18.2 points per game, with a very good shooting percentage - 54% for 2 points and 37% behind the line.


In the NCAA he played for South Carolina during the period 2003-2005 year. His European career began in the Finnish Korihayt, where he played during the 2007/2008 season. Then go to Topol Helsinki, and returned to Korihayt.

Josh Gonner will go for a two-day Balkan tour in Serbia. First game is tonight against KK Nis. The second meeting is on Wednesday against Pirot.

Balkan continue to be the most active EUROHOLD Balkan League team on the transfer market this summer. Today the Greens from Botevgrad acquired one of the biggest Bulgarian talents in the last couple of years - Emil Binev from Chernomorets Burgas.

Binev spent all of his career until now with his home team Chernomorets Burgas. He has played at every level of the Bulgarian youth national teams, as in July this year he was part of the U20 squad which finished fourth in Division B.

Last season he played in 33 games for Chernomorets, including 9 starts. He didnt get much playing time though. Yet he averaged 3.3 points and 1.1 rebound in 11 minutes per game.

Binev has also participated in numerous basketball camps for young talents all over Europe, including the NBA Basketball Without Borders in 2007.

Lovcen Cetinje will not play in the BIBL next season

Today it became clear that Lovcen Cetinje - the Montenegrin team, who made their debut in the EUROHOLD Balkan League last season, will be taken out of the competition and will not play in the BIBL in the 2010/2011 season.

The reason for this is that the team did not fulfil their obligations to the EUROHOLD Balkan League.

The management of the BIBL will come out with an official statement about possible changes in the competition format and a new official schedule for the new season, as that will happen next week.

However the league will still have a team from Montenegro this year, as Mornar Bar remains in the competition.

One of Balkan Botevgrads key players from last season - Jordan Bozov is going to remain on the teams roster for the upcoming season, after he extended his contract with the club.

Bozov is the third notable name in Balkans roster for the new season. Georgi Davidov, who was on the team last season as well is staying in Botevgrad, and Dwayne Morton is coming back from Chernomorets. Krum Doychinov also will play in Balkan after leaving Euroins Cherno More.

Last season, Bozov helped Balkan clinch the bronze medals in the National Basketball League. He appeared in a total of 36 games for Balkan, including 30 starts.

His average stats were 17.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.4 steals per game, in 31.7 minutes per contest.

Before joining Balkan, Bozov has played for Bulgarian CSKA and Levski, Hapoel Galil Elyon from Israel, Burgos from Spains LEB Oro and APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus.
