Levski took 16 points advantage after first leg against Feni Industries
Levski is going to Kavadarci next week with 16 points advantage as they defeated Feni Industries in very entertaining game by the score of 91-75. That was the first leg of the quarterfinal matchup between both sides in Eurohold Balkan League edition 2008/09. However there is one more game and there is 40 more minutes to decide the winner of this tie which will qualify for the Final Four.
Macedonian champions started much better and in the 3rd minute of the game were up 6-0. Only minute later thanks to the 206 cm tall center Zlatko Gocevski visitors had eight points earlier advantage – 10-2. Gocevski had 8 of those 10 points for Feni Industries.
Marcus Hall scored his first basket in the middle of the opening quarter, Arnas Kazlauskas came of the bench to hit first 3-pointer for his team in this game while captain Stefan Georgiev 3 consecutive shots cut it to only a single point Feni Industries lead – 15-16 with 3 minutes to go in the quarter. Another baskets by Georgiev and Hall brought the first lead of Levski in this match and at the end of the first 10 minutes they already were up 23-19.
Donald Cole managed the first two points of Feni Industries in the second quarter but then Asen Velikov with a layup and 3-pointer put Levski up 28-21 after 12 minutes of play. With 5.59 to go before the half time break Taliek Brown cut it to 30-27 but then players of coach Konstantin Papazov went on 9-0 series thanks to long shot by Zlatin Georgiev and 6 points in row by Dwayne Morton. Jump shot by Brown and free throw by Goran Samardziev cut it to 39-30 before Charles Jones to score another shot way behind the arc for 42-30 Levski lead. However at the break Macedonians cut it to single digit 44-35 behind two layups with fouls of Brown and Milan Prekovic.
Levski had 13 points lead in minute 27 – 61-48 with Cole the player to keep the visitors in the game. Thanks to him and 5 points in row by Prekovic Feni Industries cut the score to only 5 points – 63-58 with 1.19 before the end of third quarter.
Fourth quarter started with Levski up 67-60, both teams exchanged few baskets and with 7.21 before the final buzzer the score was 72-66. Kazlauskas scored and Zlatin Georgiev with layup and 3-pointer once again gave the home team double digit lead – 79-66. Minute and half before the end Marko Dimitrijevic for the corener cut it to 83-73 but the man of the match Stefan Georgiev managed two layups in row, one of them with extra shot from the free throw line. Cole managed the only shot for the visitors until the end before Kazlauskas to score the last basket in this game with 2 seconds to go in the game to give Levski 16 points victory.
Stefan Georgiev was the best player in Universiada Hall in Sofia Wednesday night. In 36 minutes he scored season high in Eurohold Balkan League 28 points and with 10 rebounds registered his fourth double double of the season in this tournament. Bulgarian National team center was 11 of 15 for 2 points and never missed for 3 (1 of 1) and from the free throw line (3 of 3).
Six players from the Bulgarian team managed to score from the 3-point line as Lithuanian Arnas Kazlauskas captured 3 succesful shots from downtown. One of them was in the last possession of Levski to put them up by final 16 points first leg advantage. Kazlauskas managed 17 points.
Topscorer Marcus Hall was very well guarded by defense of Macedonian team and at the end had uncharacteristic for him only 11 points. However he added 7 assists, the most since the start of the BIBL this year.
Levski turn the ball over only 8 times while Feni Industries lost the possession in 13 of their attacks.
Donald Cole ended with 28 points with very high scoring percentage – 7 of 8 for 2 points and 4 of 6 behind the 3 point arc. Other american player who used to play for Lukoil Academic in Bulgaria - Taliek Brown scored 15 points and added 6 assists and 5 rebounds for one of his best games in the tournament so far. Zlatko Gocevski was the only other player from the visitors in double figures – 16 points in 32 minutes.
Both coaches used 8 players apiece in their rotation but Levski bench outscored Feni Industries one 30 to 3.
Second game will take place next week in Kavadarci and the winner of this matchup will play versus winner of Radnicki 034 Group-Rilski Sportist. They will start tomorrow with first game on the home court of Serbians in Kragujevac.
