Euroins Cherno More one step closer to the Final Four
Euroins Cherno More achieved an important away win in the first leg of the EUROHOLD Balkan League Quarterfinals, after defeating OKK Beograd in Hala Pionir in Belgrade with a final score of 87:92.
Despite the absence of their captain Simeon Tsenov, and Krum Doychinov not playing, Daniel Dimitrov`s young side took a decisive step to qualifying for the Final 4 of the EUROHOLD Balkan League.
Aleksandar Yanev opened the score after scoring a free-throw for 0:1 just 2 seconds into the game. Dragan Kruscic responded immediately with a basket for 2:1. Neither team was able to break ahead with a big difference, as until the end of the first quarter the score was tied a couple of times (10:10, 18:18 and 21:21). Dragan Mitrovic scored two free-throws two make the score 23:21 for OKK. A successful free-throw by Gary Ware and a jumper by Vasil Kyosev took Cherno More ahead 23:24. Gary Ware scored another jumpshot with 20 seconds remaining to settle the score after 10 minutes at 23:26.
Euroins Cherno More started the second period strong, making a 10:2 run in the first 4 minutes of the quarter. Milos Suzic and Nikola Korac scored in a row to decrease OKK`s losing down to 7 points (29:36). 1.32 before halftime, Cherno More were up by 12 points - 33:45 after a good shot by Nikolay Kolev. Tihomir Zhelev scored a three-pointer to make the score 38:50 for the team from Varna after 20 minutes of play.
The third period didn`t start in the way OKK Beograd would want it to do. Euroins Cherno More kept on increasing their lead, as less than six minutes before the end of the third period, Daniel Dimitrov`s side were up by 15 points - 47:62, as Dimitar Mirakovski made a three-pointer. OKK managed to find a way to decrease their losing, as 43 seconds before the end of the third they were down by 7 - 63:70. Tihomir Zhelev and Igor Bakovic scored 4 conscutive points to make the lead once again in double digits - 63:74 after 30 minutes of play.
Euroins Cherno More kept their momentum, and their lead continued to increase as the fourth quarter started. Baskets by Hrisi Dimitrov and Aleksandar Yanev gave them a 16-point lead - 66:82 with less than 7 minutes to go. An 8:0 run gave OKK Beograd a chance to hope for something more, as they decreased the difference down to 79:86. Another good run, this time 6:0 decreased Varna`s lead to just 3 points - 87:90, but Dimitar Mirakovski scored 2 points to make the final score 87:92.
Tihomir Zhelev was the top scorer for Euroins Cherno More, finishing with 19 points along with 7 assists. Hrisimir Dimitrov scored 16 points, adding 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals, and Igor Bakovic and Aleksandar Yanev scored 14 points each. Dimitar Mirakovski finished with 11.
Dragan Mitrovic led the way for OKK Beograd, scoring 20 points, and he added 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Dragan Kruscic finished with 19 points, 5 assists and 5 boards, while Branko Andzic and Nikola Korac added 15 and 14 points. Sasa Mijajlovic was the fifth OKK player to finish in double digits, as he added 10 points.
The second quarterfinal game is next week, the 24th of March in Varna.
