BC Kavala started great in the Top 6 of EUROHOLD Balkan League. The team defeated BC Galil Gilboa away by 78-73 and handed the current champions their first home defeat of the season. In the same time it was first win for Kavala away from home and it couldn′t come at a better time. In the next round Kavala will host Levski on February 13th while on the same day Galil will welcome Teodo at home.
Kavala scored the first points of the match and had the lead in the first minutes. Galil tied the score for first time at 12 points apiece but the visitors answered back with 4 points in a row. They managed to hold on to their advantage and the first quarter finished 24-19 for Kavala.
The visitors′s advantage went up to 7 points but the hosts made a 7-0 run and tied the score. In the middle of the second quarter the hosts took their first lead in the game after Mitchell Watt scored a basket but it didn′t last long as Kavala once again went in front. Shortly before the end of the first half Rakim Sander scored for the hosts to give them the lead but the last basket was for Steva Panos and Kavala was up 40-39 after 20 minutes.
The visitors scored the first 4 points in the third quarter and had the lead in the next minutes. However the game was very close and after a 6-0 run the hosts took a 1-point lead. Again though it didn′t last long as Kavala went in front and even pulled away by 7 points for 63-56 after the end of the quarter.
In the first four minutes of the last quarter both teams had scored just 2 points each and after a three-pointer the visitors took a 10-point lead. What followed was 5 straight points for the hosts but Kavala answered with the same and held on for the win in the closing minutes.
Kavala had an advantage in three-point shooting whchi made a difference. The team scored 10 times from 25 attempts while Galil was 6 from 16. The biggest problem for the hosts was however the free throw shootint as they had 31 attempts and missed 14 of them.
Nemanja Mitrovic was the top scorer for the winners with 12 points while Gregor Arbet had 11. For the home team Mitchell Watt had 17 points while Rakim Sanders added 16.
