EUROHOLD Balkan League is happy to announce that from today there is a new member in our Balkan basketball family. This is the Bulgarian club BC Beroe.
The General Manager of Beroe - Vasil Kifev, has approached the League′s management already some time ago, sharing his positive idea to try to become part of it starting from season 2015-2016. BC Beroe is a team which budget in its main part is based on the support of the Municiapilty of Stara Zagora and the Mayor himself - Mr. Jivko Todorov. After yesterday he gave his blessing and final Yes, today BC Beroe officially applied in front of the BIBL.
The purpose of the Balkan League has always been to support young teams, young and talented players and the sports communities in the smaller cities. We do believe we have been successfully doing it through the years and the fact that BC Beroe would join the league only proves we are in the right direction.
One more Bulgarian team competing in an international competition can only contribute to the local league and to the development of the local players and the national teams.
We are very thankful to the Bulgarian Basketball Federation and especially to Mr. Georgi Glushkov who has always been supporting our project and standing behind us. Representing us yesterday in front of the Mayor by also being a member of the BIBL Board, means a lot and only shows that the Bulgarian Federation together with the BIBL have been working in cooperation for the good and growing of the baketball in the region. Thus, the letter of support by the Federation towards BC Beroe′s participation in season 2015/2016 is expected to arrive any time soon.
BC Beroe returned to the top division in Bulgaria during season 2012/2013 after almost 40 year of absence. In 2012 the team won the championship in second division after going unbeaten throughout the season and taking 18 victories in 18 games. In three years in Bulgarian NBL Beroe have established themselves in a good position in the middle of the standings.
In its first season back Beroe finished in 7th place with 11 wins and 16 defeats before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Levski. The next season wasn′t that good for the team from Stara Zagora as they won only 3 games from 24 played and didn′t qualify for the playoffs. However in 2014/2015 Beroe did much better and finished 6th in the regular season with 10-14 record. In the playoffs the team played two hard fought games with Rilski Sportist but lost them both and was eliminated.
Head coach of Beroe is Lubomir Minchev who has worked before in Levski, Lukoil Academic and Cherno more. For a few years he coaches also youth Bulgarian national teams and twice managed to qualify with them to division A. Beroe′s policy is to rely on young local players which is also the main purpose of the Balkan League.
During next week Mr. Shtriks - the Sports Director and Mr. Toshev - the Competition Manager are planning to visit the city of Stara Zagora, meet the Mayor, Mr. Jivko Todorov personally and check the sports hall and hotel the team would like to use throughout the season.
