Huge fourth quarter inspires Kozuv for a double-digit lead
KK Kozuv took a double-digit advantage over KK Mornar in one of the semifinals of SIGAL-UNIQA Balkan League. The team from Gevgelija won 86-71 at home and will carry a very good advantage to the second leg in Bar in a week time. The hosts took that big lead thanks to a great fourth quarter as they trailed by 1 before it started. Kozuv played very well from the first second and after an inspired last ten minutes of the match managed to improve its chances of reaching the final. Mornar on the other side didn′t play nearly as well as they did in recent weeks and after missing a lot of chances in the final quarter, will have to do something big at home next Tuesday.
Mornar scored the first five points but Kozuv responded with 7-0. The visitors however scored the next 8 to take a 6-point advantage but the hosts tied the game quickly. They not only did that but again took the lead and after finishing the first quarter on a 6-0 run were up by 5 after ten minutes.
Kozuv stayed in front in the second quarter with the difference being between 4 and 6 points. It reached also 7 but then Mornar made a quick 5-0 run to cut the deficit. Kozuv though responded with 6-0 and after both teams exchanged points, Radunovic scored at the end of the first half and closed the gap to 6 points in favour of the home side.
Kozuv kept the lead in the first minutes of the third quarter but the game was very close. A Lamont Jones basket cut the deficit to 2 but the hosts answered with 7-2 to again increase the advantage. Mornar however kept trying and took a 1-point lead after the end of this period as Sampson scored a triple.
A 6-0 start of the fourth quarter allowed Kozuv to take the lead back. Around the middle of it Vladimir Brckov scored 6 points in a row to give his team an advantage of 9. The visitors responded by scoring in two straight attacks but then Kozuv made an 8-0 run to go up by 13 with two minutes to go. Then both teams exchanged two points and moments later Nesovic made the difference 15 and it was the final one.
Kozuv scored 26 points off 18 Mornar turnovers while the visitors had just 12 points off 13 turnovers by the home side.
The captain Vladimir Brckov had a great game for the winners with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 assists. Aleksej Nesovic also played well with his 18 points ans Aleksandar Sterjov had an important 14 points and 5 rebounds.
The only double digit scorer for the visitors was Lamont Jones who finished with 30 points but was 10 of 28 from the field. Robert Sampson had 9 points and 5 rebounds while Marko Perovic added 8 and 5.
