Popovic is the hero for Bashkimi in a wild game
KB Bashkimi recorded a very important win in group A of SIGAL-UNIQA Balkan League. The team from Prizren visited the leader KK Kumanovo 2009 and took a dramatic 96-95 victory in a crazy game. It had to be decided in overtime and then at the buzzer when Marko Popovic scored the winning basket. With that result Bashkimi now has three straight wins and 3-4 record so its chances for the Second Stage are again wide open. Kumanovo is the leader of the group with 5-2 but the gap with the others is closed. Next week Kumanovo will host KB Sigal Prishtina while Bashkimi will welcome Beroe.
It was a fantastic start for the hosts who scored the first 16 points of the game. They had a great first period and led by a lot, at one point even by 21. Things however changed when the second quarter started. Bashkimi went on a 14-2 run to close the gap to just 6 points and although the hosts were up by 9 at the break, the game was wide open.
Bashkimi started very well the second half and not only cut the deficit but took a 7-point lead after an 11-0 run. It went down to 2 after 30 minutes and we were in for an entertaining final period. It happened so as both teams exchanged points and the score was tied heading in to the final two minutes. After the visitors made a mistake Pekovic scored to give Kumanovo a 2-point advantage but them immediately the visitors respored the tie. Mijatovic scored two free throws to put Kumanovo ahead, then Kostoski added one more but Johnson scored a three-pointer for another tie with 17 seconds to go. The final offense was for the home team but Pekovic missed a jumper and the game went to overtime.
The visitors started it on a 7-1 run to go up by 6 points. They held on to the advantage but it went down to 1 in the final seconds. With 15 to go Locke though scored only one free throw and then Kostoski hit a triple to put Kumanovo ahead by 1. However there was enough time for Bashkimi and Popovic scored at the buzzer to give his team a precious win.
Eric Palm had another good game for Bashkimi and finished with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Kejuan Johnson was the other who did very well with 24 points and 11 rebounds while Marko Popovic and Kayel Locke scored 18 apiece.
Again the top scorer for Kumanovo was Aleksandar Kostoski who finished with 28 points while also adding 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Danilo Mijatovic added 16 points while three other players added 11 apiece.
