Grief in the Israeli and European basketball
Mr. Reuven Virovnik, who is considered the best referee in the Israeli Basketball and who was chairman of the Referee′s Association died on Saturday after a long battle with cancer.
Mr. Virovnik was one of the most senior European officials and was officiating at the world′s top basketball events. Even after retiring from officiating, he remained in the officiating world and became chairman of the referees. He was awarded for his good job by being an observer at the World Championships and the Olympics - 2010 World Championship in Turkey and 2012 London Olympics. Besides, he was officiating the final game at the 1998 World Championship between Russia and Yugoslavia.
Mr. Virovnik was also the commissioner and observer in BIBL Final Four in 2012 which took place in Gan Ner, Israel
Mr. Virovnik was very popular at the international basketball world. He was a member of FIBA Technical committee, FIBA Instructor and FIBA commissioner.
He took a high-level position at the Israeli Airlines company - El Al - vice president of the human resources department.
Mr. Virovnik was a leading figure in the officiating development of the BIBL Sports Director Shay Shtriks and he was his role-model and teacher during his entire carrier both in Israel and on the international stage.
